How long a stay is ok for a conference visa? What documents are needed?

The traveler is a Japanese citizen coming from the US to China for an academic conference. He wants to arrive several days early for sightseeing.

Hi, generally a single entry Chinese visa will be granted with 30 days as the duration of stay. That means he can stay full 30 days after entry. So, of course he can enter several days early for sightseeing.
