Changing S2 Visa to Z. Is it necessary?

I currently hold a S2 as my husband is here on a three year contract. I've been offered a job teaching English at a local high school. Since I am already here and have a resident permit, is it necessary to to change to the Z type in order to get the work permit? If I need to change to type Z, can I do that here in China at the embassy or do I need to go back to the US to change it?

Hi, it is illegal to work on S2, so you have to leave and apply for work Z for work. That is true that you need to get work permit first then apply for Z in the US.

As it turned out, Jojo, I did have to apply for the work visa. It didn't make any sense to me, but a lot of what goes on in China doesn't make sense to me. lol I've just learned to not question it and go with the flow. I actually had to fly back to the US to get some of the documents and apply for the Z.
