Did not keep old Chinese passport

I was born in China, now a U. S citizen. Last time I went back to PRC was in 1996 with U.S passport. But I didn't know I have to keep the old passport. Now I want to visit PRC again - need apply a Chinese visa, do I have to go to San Fransisco in person? Can I go to Hong Kong first, then apply there?

Hi, do you have the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page, as well as the previous Chinese visa page? as I know, photocopies of these documents are acceptable for application. To apply in HK is now out of option if you are not a HK resident.
