Use Taipei for 72 hours free transit?

Can I fly lax to pvg, spend 70 hours in Shanghai, fly to Taipei for 36 hours, fly back to pvg for (a) 0 hours flying back to lax or (b) 48 hours then fly back to lax and meet 72 hour visa requirement?

Thanks

Scott, there is no problem about your routes. But I am afraid that you might be refused for your return transit in Shanghai. You just stay for 36 hours in Taipei, which might make the immigration officer think you take advantage of the policy for avoiding applying for a visa. I am just worried.
