Dates conversion?

Is there a formula to convert solar dates to lunar dates (and vice versa)? If not, is there a book(s) where one can read how the process goes?

Yes, people calculate solar dates and lunar dates and then make up the solar and lunar calendars. However, it's too difficult for us to understand how the formula was made.
