Do I need to inform China Eastern Airline of my 72 hour exemption from the visa?
Hi. Thank you for your open Q&A forum!
I'm going from San Diego, US to Pudong, Shanghai for less than 72 hours.
I want to leave the airport while I am there and I will not be checking in at a hotel, I will be staying at a friend's house in Shanghai.
I saw in a previous Q&A that the man called China Eastern Airlines and they said they won't declare anything to the Immigration Inspection in advance.
You answered that "Passengers now should clear customs and apply for transit permit directly".
Here are my main 3 questions:
1. To clarify, I do not have to inform my airline and I can apply for the transit permit once I land?
2. Do I have to register or check-in at a police station in addition to getting my permit at the airport?
I also saw that on the China Eastern Airlines website that there is an announcement that "From 2013, United States passport holders can enjoy up to 72 hours for transiting in Shanghai with VISA free!" But, it does not say anywhere what the process is for the exemption, so I just wanted to make sure I can show up without informing anyone ahead of time.
Thanks for your time!
