We say "压岁钱(yā suì qián)" in Chinese. In some areas, the kids usually kowtowed to the elder people and say "Happy New Year" to them and then the elder people give lucky money to the kids. In my hometown, kids seldom kowtow for asking the lucky money. They just say Happy New Year and then they receive their lucky money.

Thank you, LiHong. I gave my daughter $20 lucky money, in a red envelope and am going to continue the tradition. Thanks again for the info!
