z visa expires

Question

What happens if mine expires the same day I arrive in China? Will I be deported? Or do I have to leave the country and get one? I am in Kiev, Ukraine. Can I get a L type here first in Chinese embassy and then return to PRC?

I think you should go back and apply for another Z type. You must know that Z type is valid for 30 days only and you should apply for the temporary resident permit immediately when you arrive (before it expires). It takes around a week to deal with the resident permit application. So you don't have time to do that.
