About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Will this be an issue, and do we qualify for the 72 hour visa?

We have tickets to Thailand, but connecting via shanghai. Our tickets to/from Los Angeles to shanghai are with one airlines, and the tickets to/from shanghai to thailand are with another.

It's ok as long as you stay less than 72 hours in Shanghai and are permitted to enter Thailand legally.
