Visa for 12 hour stop in Shanghai

I am a UK passport holder living in Hong Kong and want to travel to Tokyo with a 12 hour stop in Shanghai, will I need a visa to leave the Shanghai airport? Do I get this at the airport?
Thanks

You enjoy 72 hours free transit in Shanghai. SO I don't think you need to apply one.
