why was silk so important?

like, why was silk the world to them???? there are many similar fabrics. so i was just wondering.

Personally speaking, it is so popular because clothes or cloth made of silk is elegant. In summer, they are cooler than clothes made of other fabrics. Also it's said that it is helpful to people's health, which is unparalleled.
