What to do between Xi'an and Beijing in 15 days

2 of us have 15 days in China and we fly into Xi'an and out of Beijing. The key reason for the trip is to climb Mt. Hua Shan, but besides that, we have no real plans. We aren't into big cities and certainly like to get off the beaten track and explore the "less touristy" places. Is there anywhere between Xi'an and Beijing that we simply should not miss out on?

Hi, Gareth.
Would you mind tell me what kind of places do you want to go or you are interested in what, so that I may introduce some according to that.
If you are interested to climb the mountain, I think the Zhongnan Mountain in Xian cannot be missed. That place has less tourists. i red Bill Porter's book and then went there. The scenery is wonderful, I think. Maybe you can have a try there.

From Xian, you can go to Pingyao, a quiet ancient town. Or to Luoyang and the shaolin temple. You can also take a bus from Xian to the Wudang mountain, which is a famous Taoist mountain.

We booked our trip about a week ago after seeing Hua Shan the week before, so we are really unsure as to what we want to see or where we want to go. It was a spur of the moment thing, so we now have to build an itinerary. Less people is always good, and scenery is also good. We may have our climbing gear with us as well. Thanks for your help!

We are also looking to camp our way along the route. Is there anywhere we should definitely camp and definitely avoid? Is camping free, and can you just camp anywhere?
