About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

what do i need to do in preparation for a 72 hour visa free transit?

Hi, I am from UK, a British passport holder. I am currently in Bali and will be travelling from either Bali, Bangkok, Kuala Lumphur, or Singapore to Los Angeles. I want to stop off for a day or so in Guangzhou to visit a friend. Is there anything i need to do in advance while booking my ticket in order to obtain 72 hours free transit pass?. Also does the flight have to be a connecting transit flight or can it be two separate flights?
Thank you

A connecting transit flight is better as required. You just inform your airline about the free transit request then the permit will be issued upon arrival.

Thank you, at which point to i inform the airline about transit request? when checking in or when making booking, the latter may be more difficult as i am booking online.

You can do this when checking in at the airport.
