are there any events during the spring festival in China that I can enjoy during my trip this year?

Yes, there are. You can enjoy the temple fairs in Shanghai and Beijing.
Specifically, may I know which city you are going to visit? Then I can find whether there are such events in that city during Chinese Spring Festival.2

Thanks! I will probably be in Beijing, but I don't mind going to either place. I tried to search for the timings of temple fairs but couldn't find it :(2

There is a lantern fair in Datuan Peach Garden in Zhaoqiao Village, Datuan Town, Pudong District of Shanghai. You may go and have fun there. It will be last till March 21st.0
