I'm a US citizen, can apply 2-year multi entry Q2 visa?

I heard that your Q visa is just a visa to get you into the country, after your get into China you have to go to the PSB and they will give you a resident permit, if you are in the same city as your wife then they can give you a 1 year permit or longer if you have the money to backup your stay.0

Well Q1 visa you can obtain temporary residence from china you dont have to go to your country. Actually it depends to every country not the same but I got mine from here.0
