About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour visa free transit, do we need to apply for transit permits beforehand?

traveling from Australia to Italy via Shanghai, we have italian, australian and swiss passports respectively, can we visit the city during our 8 hour stopover? where do we obtain these?

You are eligible for the 72 hours free transit in Shanghai. Therefore, you don't need to apply for the transit permits. There are leading signs at the airport that lead you to the windows where you can apply for it.
