About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

Stay in Shanghai: Which visa?

Hello, I entered China this April on an F. This summer, I decided to move to Shanghai and got a residence permit 学习, which is valid until 31 JAN 2014. I want to stay for another 6 months, but not at my university – instead, I intend to take a private teacher at another school.

That school told me they can get me an X2 via Hong Kong. My plan: Leave China before 31 JAN, travel for a few weeks in South East Asia, go to Hong Kong and get my X2, and go back to Shanghai.

Is that possible?

And are there any other feasible ways via Hong Kong? I'd prefer not to sign up for a class at all.
Regards,
Tobi

Hi, you have to provide Original and photocopy of Admission Notice issued by a school or other entities in China if you want to get an X2. But if you prefer not to sign up for a class, I don't think they will send you this admission notice for application. Also, it is possible for you to get a tourist L in HK, but it can only be issued with 30 days as duration of stay.

Thank you, Chenny. Do you think it would be possible to get an L type and extend it twice in Pudong, then get another L and extend it twice again? I heard that some people do that, but I already have an F type and a residence permit in my passport.

Theoretically, you can do that. L type can be extended for two time at most. Considering you already have the F type and resident permit on your passport, you can apply for a multiple one. Then you needn't be bothered with the extension matter.
