Does the 72 hour exemption also apply in Kunming too and can we get it at the airport? We have an over night stop over

No, Kunming does not provide 72 hr free transit permit. But if your stopover is less than 24 hours in Kunming, visa is not required as well, you only need to apply for a stay permit at the airport if you want to go out of the airport for a hotel.
