Less than 24 hours in Shanghai -> police registration needed?

Hi, I'm flying from Paris to Melbourne via Shanghai and I'd like to make the most of my 16-hour-transit to visit a bit of the city. My stay in Shanghia is during daytime so I haven't booked any hotel room. Do I need to register at a police station even if my stay in Shanghai will last less than 24 hours? If yes, could you let me know where I can find a police office near Pu Dong airport or People's Square, preferably where some policement speak English? Thank you!

I don't think you need to register at any police station.
