Is there not a free three day transit/tourist visa issued at the airport or border

In June I was in transit at Beijing airport and saw signs everywhere saying that a 72 hour permit was available to go sightseeing. Is this true and if I am going to Hong Kong and just want to go over to Guangzhou or Shenzhen then can I get this visa at the border?

Hi, it is true that Guangzhou provides 72 hour free transit, but you should prepare a ticket with stopover via Guangzhou airport to the third country/region. The itinerary like Hong Kong-Guangzhou-Hongkong does not apply to this free transit policy.
