Since you are all seniors, considering the convenience, it is suggested to book a local tour to travel around.
If you are energetic and have good health, you may travel on your own.
You can take the trains from KM to Dali and then the trains from Dali to Lijiang. From Lijiang, there are direct buses for Shangri-la. For your case, you can travel from LJ to Shangri-la can be covered by hiring a local bus.
