About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

If it takes more than 30 days to get the residence permit after arrival, do you have to leave China?

I came on an S1 visa. Paperwork took much longer than expected. I was afraid of overstaying on ut, so I left before 30 days were up. However, the S1 has no expiration date on it. Could I have just stayed until the residence permit finally came through? Is there a limit on how many times you can show up at the government office before they don't let you keep trying?

Hi, did you submitted your passport and documents for residence permit application to the PSB office? if yes, you can reside legally in China by right of the receipt during the application process.

Thanks Francis,
To clarify, I came with all my documents, but the PSB office was insisting on an original marriage certificate, which was in the United States. If I mailed it to China, it would have arrived over 30 days after I had entered the counry. So, from the PSB point of view, I hadn't "applied" for the residence permit yet, because they were saying I didn't meet the requirements. They wouldn't let me fill out the form saying I'd had an interview with the PSB until I had the original with me. I had already gone to the PSB office multiple times, so I don't know if that counts as "applying" for the residence permit within 30 days or not.

Have you come to China on a S1 visa before, or know someone who has?

When you go to the PSB office they have you take a number, but that would be the only record of me being there.
Can you explain the receipt you're talking about?

I know someone who has S1. But from your posts above, the PSB has not accepted your application for residence permit. You should better get your original marriage certificate asap for application and apply for extension of your stay if necessary. Personally, I think it is ok to stay until you get the document. The receipt is a form relesed showing that your application is under processing at PSB.
