Sorry, I am afraid that you can't. You have to register at the local PSB that administrates your Chinese friends' home in person or ask yoru friend to register in 24 hours when you arrive. If you live in the countryside, you need to register in 72 hours.

Thank you very much Kevin! As I have never been to PRC and you seem very experienced, I would be grateful if you could analyze my travel path. I am Italian citizen. I am flying from London, UK, to Hong Kong on the 21 November 2013. On the 26th at 9 am I am flying from HK to Shanghai (Dragon Air flight). On the 28th I fly from Shanghai to London at 11 am (British Airways). I bought two different tickets.

In Shanghai, I am going to register in the hotel where my Italian friend lives. He told me that they are able to communicate my position to the Police from their desk. Do you see any problem in obtaining the 72 hours free transit?

Many Thanks,
Alfonso

Well, if the hotel can do the registration for you, you won't have a problem. Enjoy your meeting with your friends.
