Inviter in China necessary?

In the visa application form in point 2.8 I have to fill in information of the inviter. Can this field be left empty or is it necessary to get invited?

Which type are you going to apply? If you apply for a L type one, you must provide the round-trip air tickets and hotel bookings if you don't have the invitation letter.

I am applying for a L type vusa. I have a back flight ticket and hotel bookings but no flight ticket for entering China, because I will enter by train from Vietnam and they sell no train tickets to people without visa.
