IS IT TRAVEL CHEQUES OR UD DOLLAR CASH ?

I'm expecting to go to China by January and I wonder how much cash/ dollars I should show at the Chinese embassy as a Sri Lankan, I'm expecting to go around Wuxi area mostly for 3 to 6 weeks.
I have been offered accommodation already there by a chinese friend.
