If it is for international transit, no visa is needed.

Hello, I´m the same type of visitor like anneC from Ireland :) I just don´t understand one thing - do I need any paper or anything? Or just have a ticket to Sydney in my hand and all cops will be ok? Thank you, hope you understand my english ;)

You just need to show your passport and flight ticket for transit. Visa is not required for a stay less than 72 hours in Shanghai.
