About:China Visa Application in USA

American visiting HK, considering day trip to Shenzhen

I'm going to Hong Kong for a week in December 2013 (about 9 weeks from now). I am considering a day trip (via MTR train) to Shenzhen. I know I am NOT eligible for the VOA scheme like EU or Commonwealth citizens. It's an expensive proposition (US$140) for the Chinese visa application - is it worth it?

Also, I don't have a detailed itinerary planned (I'm visiting while my wife will be working long days in HK Central). That means I don't have a specific date chosen for when I'd like to go to Shenzhen. I was hoping I could get mine, explore HK for a couple of days, then decide if/when I want to cross to Shenzhen. Is this possible, or should I choose a specific day in advance?

Thank you.

You can apply for a Chinese tourist L while you are in HK, it is generally valid for 3 months with duration of 30 days. So, it is ok to choose any day within next 3 months as a general reference for consular officers to issue L.

Travel to Huang Gang border. By mini-bus or regular bus.
