About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Z to x visa, and I have a residence permit.

I need to change my z to an x for the university I will be attending this fall. I already have a residence permit. Will I have to leave the country to change my type?

No you dont necessary have to exit the country.Technically if your changing from any type to "X",you dont really have to exit mainland china.

Thank you. One more question if I may. Since I already have a valid residence permit, am I required to take another physical examination? The university asked me to take one, then said they later told me they think I can do without. Finding a clear answer is quite hard it seems.

You should do a physical check because only the reord issued with recent 6 months is acceptable for application. I think your old one expires.
