change of visa status

Hello,
earlier this year I studied in China and I entered on a tourist L and changed it to a student X once I was there. I have been told by a friend that it is no longer possible to change the status. Can you confirm whether or not this is true?

Yes, this is true. The new regulation came into effect from September 1st 2013, which the conversion is not allowed any more. You should apply for a student X directly before visiting.
