I am bringing gifts to friends on my next China visit. Each is less than $300, but total is $1,000.

Is tax assessed on a per gift item or on total cost of all of the gift items? In my case, do I have to declare the individual gift items?

I remeber it is allowed to take in items with the value of CNY5,000 for free. For the extra ones, you need to pay tax. These gifts should not require to be declared.
