For the hotel do you refer to the Sheraton Nanjing Kingsley Hotel and Towers and for the university, do you refer to the Gulou campus?
If so, it is suggested to take a taxi to travel, because the distance between the Sheraton Nanjing Kingsley Hotel and Towers and the Gulou campus is around 3km.
If you refer to the Xianlin campus, you can walk to Nanda Xianlin Xiaoqu Station of subway line 2 where you can take the subway line 2 to reach Shanghai Road Station. Get out of the station from Exit 3 and walk along Hanzhong Road to reach your hotel easily.

Thanks for the reply Kate. Yes, I mean the Gulou campus of NJ University. Can I take the subway? Right now for some reason unhired taxis are hard to find on the streets of the city.

Yes, the subway is acceptable, but you need to transfer and need to walk for a whole before and after taking the subway.
From your hotel, you can walk along Hanzhong Road to reach Shanghai Road Station where you can take the subway line 2 to reach Xinjiekou Station. Then you can change to line 1 to reach Zhujiang Road Station. Get out of the station, you can walk along Zhongshan Road to reach Hankou Road. Then turn to west road and walk along Hankou Road to find your hotel easily.
Hope my descripition is clear and can help you to find your hotel easily.
