About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I'll be in Beijing for 17 hrs and will not stay in a hotel. Must I register at a Police Station?

If only going into Beijing for a few hours, must I still register at a Police Station? Also, if I wish to leave the transit area, but not the airport (If my Chinese friend meets me for a meal at the airport) must I still register with the police and if so, where are they located at the airport?

You don't need to register if you don't leave the airport.
