It is hard to tell you in detail to find the platform. In my opinion, you can see the direction boards at the railway station or ask the staff there to find the platform directly. It is very easy to find, so please do not worry.

we have to pick up our reserved tickets on the day previous to our departure to Xi'an. Then again I imagine the staff will guide us to the right window at the station.BJ West seems huge from the photos I've seen on the Internet. Are there any direction signs in Englishor I am asking too much :-))

Please do not worry. Although the railway station is big, but the direction boards are clearly and written in both Chinese and English. It is very easy to find the place to get your ticket and the platform when you board the train.
