About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am an Australian and plan to go to USA via Shanghai to say stay in Shanghai less than 72 hours.

Then from USA to Shanghai and will stay in Shanghai for few weeks before go back to Australia. My understanding is I eligible for 72 hours free transit in Shanghai for the first entry and need one for the second entry. Am I right?

Yes, you are right. For the second entry, a single entry tourist L is enough.
