To be honest, it is not suggested to travel to China during Chinese New Year, because you will have to meet many problem in booking hotels and train or flight tickets.
But if you have already think it well and can book all you need in advance, you can go. Of course, Spring Festival can be a wonderful time to enjoy Chinese culture and you can experience many traditional activities and funs during that time. You will have a lot of fun.

Expect massive crowds, standing room only in trains. buses are full. Chinese new Years is considered the largest human migration in the world when over 200 million take to the "road". A good time for tourists if you are in one city and do not plan to travel but for someone who wants to visit and see various places do not try. The slightest hiccup in transportation either by weather, breakdowns, or your own fault may n=mean days of waiting. I now live in Nanning. I will use my scooter if i want to go anywhere but NEVER try to travel out of town. The locals and Chinese do it because it is a tradition but if you have a few weeks to see China this is NOT the time!
