Leaving China during the residence permit process?

I'm gonna request for a temporary residence permit for family reunion. I'm gonna apply for it but I'm not sure if I can get it before my flight back to Europe since I must back to EU for a conference. Firstly, I wanna know if I can keep my passport when they're working on my case and if I can leave the country? for picking up the residence permit should I go there myself or it's possible to send my Passport with DHL or something to my spouse and she go and pick it up and send it back to me? if it's a must to go in person, it means i need to get a new visa and come back to China... in that case I might be going after a couple of months, wouldn't it be a problem?

They will definitely need to keep your passport for a couple weeks to complete the residence permit. I'm applying for a one-year residence permit soon (for the third time), so I know that this is the case.

Hi, your original passport will be kept by the PSB when apply for the residence permit. With the pick-up receipt, it is possible for your spouse to pick it up. So, you are suggested to visit your local PSB directly if you need your passport to go back to Europe.

Thanks Grant & Gavin. 1.Do you know how long will they keep the passport then? 2.and I'm confused by the local PSB we need to go. My spouse is from a small town called Dunhua. I'm telling her the PSB we need to go is the one in that city but she insists we need to go to Yanji which is the seat of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, in eastern Jilin province. Since once we get to China I don't really wanna lose the time since I may can get my passport back before leaving, do you know which of the two cities I need to go? She has registered her Hukou in Dunhua but that's a very small place and she doesn't know if Dunhua is the place we need to go or Yanji

If you mean 敦化市, you should submit your application to the Entry-Exit Administration of Dunhua City Public Security Bureau directly. The processing takes about 15 days.

Thanks Gavin. we called both Yanji and Dunhua and they said we need to get 住宿登记 in 敦化 and then go to Yanji(延吉) for the health examination and applying for the temporary permit. The once in Yanji explained everything very well but the one in Dunhua didn't really want to give us any further information what should we provide for them. They just said if your documents are ready there won't be a problem but we asked what kind of documents we need to bring and they refused to answer and said we need to see your documents first!!! As I understood 住宿登记 is "accommodation registration"... I guess, normally we should provide a rental contract or something but I was wondering if I can use the documents of my spouse parents' place since they own the place!

Yes, 住宿登记 means the accommodation registration. If you live with your parents-in-law, you can get this from their local police station.
