What can I do with a 19 hour transit?

Heya, I am from New Zealand and my boyfriend is from Germany and will be traveling to NZ from Germany and back in October. Both ways we have a 19 hour transit in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Do we get a hotel or food vouchers or are we allowed to go out of the airport to do something for the 19 hours? Do we need to apply for anything? :)
