How far can we travel from Shanghai using the 72 hour free visa?

I am planning to stop in SH on the way to Cambodia, for around 48 hours, and I am trying to find out how far you can travel on this visa (looking at some of the local towns such as Fengjing, Songjiang, Nanshi or Zhujiajiao).

Also, looking at the information here, I need to specifically tell my airline (China Eastern) that I plan to travel into the city in advance, is this correct?

You can go anywhere you want to go in SH city. I think Zhujiajiao is a pretty good place to go.
Yes, you are right. You need to contact the airline company in advance and they can help you to apply that service.

Hello. I am from SH. Besides the local towns, there are also many acient places such as YU GARDEN, CHENGHUANG TEMPLE,etc. The towns you mentioned is a little far from the downtown. I suggest you rent a car with local driver that day in case you miss the plane. The cost is from 600RMB to 1000RMB, it depends on the distance. Normany, they will charge more for foreingers. Hope you have a good stay in SH. By the way, if you need, I would like to rent a car for you ahead maybe at a cheaper price.
Pls feel free to contact me if there is any question.
