About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

I have a letter of invitation from an organization in China. Do I need airline ticket too for visa?

I am hoping to stay 2 weeks, one week as the guest of the organization and another week possibly traveling as a tourist. I want to go to get it this week. Should I buy the ticket first or get L type first? Do I have to have the exact dates or can I give the broader dates?

If you have the invitation letter from the organization, the round-trip air tickets and hotel booking are not needed when you apply for the L type one.
