About:China Visa Application in USA

can I apply for the visa before I get the airline ticket or the hotel reservation?

why do I need round trip airline ticket before I know that the tourist L is given to me.
what if the application is denied.

I am afraid not. Round-trip ticket and hotel bookings are general requirements for tourist L application without invitation letter. But very unlikely being denied visa. So, don't worry about it.
