UK passport being renewed - can i travel internally in China?

Hi there,

I am a British woman living in China. I just sent off my application to renew my UK passport which will take about 4 weeks. I still have my current passport with me but I am wondering if I can travel internally on the planes using it as ID since the UK passport authority will cancel it electronically once they receive my application. Please advise.
