About:Embassy & Consulates of U.S.A. in China

Can people in Jiangxi apply tourism visa in US consulate in Shanghai?

I would like my mom to visit us in the USA. She is in Jiangxi & would like to apply a tourist type one. Can she apply in US consulate in Shanghai? She was required to go to Beijing when she applied 20 years ago. I heard now there is no such restriction that people in Jiangxi need to go to US Embassy in Beijing.

Please advise. Thanks.

You needn't go to Beijing. Just go to the US consulate in Wuhan to submit your application.

Shanghai is closer to where she lives in Jiangxi and it is more convenient for her to go to Shanghai (than to Wuhan). Can she apply and have an interview in the Consulate in Shanghai?

Thanks and regards,

Don

I am afraid not. But you may have a try to contact the consulate directly for this.

Thank you for your reply. I have another quick question: When filling out the DS160 form for my mom, I need to specify the purposes of the trip. I have two selections: 1) Business and Tourism (Temporary Visitor) (B1/B2); and 2) Tourism/Medical Treatment (B2). My mom only comes to visit us and stay with us for a few months. Therefore, none of the two fit exactly. Which one should I choose?

Many thanks in advance.

You should choose No.2, (B2) type.
