About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I arrive Shanghai aboard a cruise ship and my stay would be approx 48hrs - am I now exempt?

No, if you visit by cruise, you are only allowed a 24 hr free stay. So, you need to apply for a Chinese visa in advance. Either a tourist L or a transit G is ok. You can enjoy 72 hour free transit if you have stopover via any of two airports in Shanghai.
