what is the best way to obtain a visa to visit China for a USA citizen?

You can submit your application to the Chinese embassy or consulate which holds consular jurisdiction of the your residency, either in person or by someone else/travel agency entrusted. The regular processing takes 4 working days at the embassy/consulate.
