do students have to take visa one month prior to its expiary? what if the passport also expiring with it?

What do you mean "take visa"? Apply for another new one or extend it? Your passport validity has nothing to do with visa validity.

Thank you for your prompt reply. This is to extend my student X.
But i haven't received my new passport yet, for them to stamp.

Yes, you need to apply one month prior to the expiration. But in your situation, you should visit the local PSB for this, and submit your application as soon as you get your new passport.
