Business visa application but my current Austrian workpermit is expiring and have applied for extension

I am a Pakistani national working in Austria on work permit. My permit will expire in mid August and I have already applied for extension as I have longer contract. I mid August I have to go to China for business project, can I apply on my current work permit that is expiring or should I wait for extension which I will get close to mid August.
