Registration at local police station necessary?

Hi,
I (German citizen) am visiting my wife (also German citizen) who is living and working in Kunming. I've got a tourist visa which is valid for 60 days and live at my wife's place for almost a week now. When you live in hotels, they usually forward your passport data to the police upon arrival. What do I have to do when I'm not living in a hotel but have private accomodation? Do I have to register at the local police station? If so, what documents do I need?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards
Oufu

Just bring your passport and your Laopo's Hukouben (Householder Register Book) and her ID card and fill a registration form at the police station. It's easy. Please do register at the police station. I have heard that new regulations will be implemented from July 1. Those who allow foreigners to stay at their homes but don't register will be fined CNY 2000 at most.

Thanks for replying! I went to the police station, they wanted to see a copy of my wife's registration paper, our rental agreement (stamped) and my passport including a copy of the main page and visa. Now I'm a legal waiguoren!
