Canadian requiring tourist visa for 3 weeks duration

My son teaches english in Shenyang and is on a business F, we would like to visit him 3 weeks over the Chistmas Holidays this year but am unsure after many searches what is required for our applications , we will have round trip air tickets, Toronto to Beijing ( we will train both ways to Shenyang ) one night hotel at Beijing airport upon arrival but will be staying with our son for the duration. Can anyone tell me if we need an invitation as I see on websearches or would our round trip air, 1 or 2 night hotel reservation be sufficient ? thanks for any advice
