Invitation needed?

I live in Florida, USA. Called agency in Houston to see if invitation was needed from my host (friend) that I am visiting in Dalian, CN. They said no. Now they tell me that was wrong and that I do need one, plus a copy of her passport and work documents (what specifically are those?) What is correct?

Hi, if you will stay with your friend in her place (that is to say, you will not provide hotel bookings for application), invitation letter is required and you should also ask for copies of her passport and work document such as work Z, Foreign Expert Certificate, and residence permit. If your inviter is a Chinese, invitation letter, and a copy of her Chinese ID are enough.
