Invitation letter?

I am visiting a friend in China for the first time, and she's going to show me around. Do I need an invitation letter if I'm going on a tourist visa?

Invitation letter is not required if you can provide round-trip ticket and hotel reservations. But if your fill your purpose of visit as "visiting friend", invitation letter is required as well as a copy of inviter's ID. So, it is based on your choice.

My friend lives in China. Does she have to manually write out the letter and scan it to me? Or can she type it up and just scan the photo?

Generally, a fax, copy or printout of invitation letter is acceptable. Both typed and handwriten ones are ok. The invitation letter must be signed by your inviter.
